VIA Drivers
Many of the companies powering the computer industry are well known giants amongst the OEM suppliers but remain largely unknown to the average computer user. This is the case with VIA Technologies. VIA Technologies is a Taiwan based company that offers core logic chipsets, low-power processors, and a variety of advanced silicon solutions to original equipment manufacturers, motherboard vendors, and system integrators around the world.
Though currently based in Taiwan, VIA was originally founded in the United States in 1987 before moving overseas in 1992. This move allowed VIA to build strong relationships in the growing IT industry taking hold in Taiwan and China.
VIA's initial success came as a PC core logic chipset manufacturer and soon extended to other areas. By 1999, VIA was the first to successfully implement the PC133 SDRAM memory standard for the Intel Pentium III and AMD Athlon processors. A few years later, VIA did it again by adding DDR SDRAM support for all major processors.
In 1999, VIA purchased the Cyrix and Centaur processor divisions from National Semiconductor and IDT. These two purchases put VIA in the microprocessor business. The VIA processors are known for their power efficiency and compact sizes.
VIA also moved into the graphics market by partnering with SONICblue. This partnership allowed VIA to add graphics accelerators and high performance graphics capabilities into their VIA IGP chipsets.
In 2002, VIA Telecom Inc. was formed after VIA Technologies acquiredCDMA2000 design team from LSI Logic. VIA Telecom is an affiliate that is located in San Diego, California focusing on the 3G telecommunications industry.
VIA also has expanded their expertise to include networking and communications technologies with products such as network controllers. Just as VIA incorporated graphics into their core chipsets, they did the same with these other technologies.
In 2008, VIA Technologies reached a new milestone with the launch of products using the VIA Isaiah Architecture. VIA has firmly established itself as a complete processor platform company.
The VIA product lineup includes: VIA chipsets, VIA processors, VIA mainboards, VIA graphics, VIA embedded, VIA networking, VIA vinyl audio, VIA video displays, and VIA peripherals. Within each family of products are numerous silicon solutions including transmitters, controllers, encoders, codecs, switches, processors, and chipsets.
In addition to the product line, VIA is leading the way with its VIA Initiatives such as the VIA Padlock Security Initiative. This initiative integrates a hardware based security solution with military-grade encryption technology and combines it into their VIA Padlock Security Engine to combat the latest computer security threats.
