Like many semiconductor and electronics companies, SigmaTel may not be a familiar name amongst consumers. Instead, SigmaTel chips quietly power consumer devices such as the first generation iPod Shuffle. OEM manufacturers do not make every piece of silicon on their own. Rather, they rely on the technologies offered by other companies as they piece together their products.
SigmaTel made a name for itself as a low-cost, highly integrated audio system on a chip and found its way into over 150 different models of MP3 players. Many different music subscription services including Rhapsody, Napster, and Yahoo Music embraced SigmaTel chips and their related technologies. While SigmaTel enjoyed a reputation for high quality audio and a huge market share in the MP3 portable player industry, it also suffered after losing placement in the iPod Shuffle. Successful technology companies understand the ups and downs of success and SigmaTel continued developing their products despite the Shuffle letdown. SigmaTel has offered highly integrated chips for portable media device and won contracts with major manufacturers such as Samsung. SigmaTel has been through a couple of acquisitions including an acquisition by IDT in 2006 followed by another one in February 2008 by Freescale Semiconductor. Throughout the various acquisitions, many SigmaTel products have remained strong and continue to be developed such as the SigmaTel portable AV SOC (System on a Chip) product line. The blend of SigmaTel and Freescale is developing into an integrated multimedia SOC product lineup. SigmaTel system on a chip technology once powered over 70% of the MP3 players on the market. Today, this on-a-chip technology continues in a variety of products including MP3 players, GPS units, consumer audio, digital imaging, TV audio, digital photo frames, multi-function printers, and many other devices that are familiar to consumers.
