Samsung is a Korean manufacturer with a rich history dating back to 1938 when founding chairman Byung-Chull Lee opened a business involving dried fish, vegetables, and fruit exports. Within ten years, Samsung owned its own flour mills and confectionary machines. As the company grew, it expanded into other markets including retail, sugar manufacturing, and fire, marine, and life insurance. Samsung Electronics Manufacturing, which was later renamed Samsung Electronics, incorporated in January 1969.
Samsung continued growing and expanding throughout the 1970s with a focus on heavy, chemical, and petrochemical industries as well as textiles and shipbuilding. Many different Samsung companies were born during this time. As the home electronics market grew, so too did Samsung Electronics. In 1974, the acquisition of Korean Semiconductor further strengthened Samsung's leadership position. By 1977, Samsung had begun exporting color televisions. A year and a half later, Samsung had reached $100 billion in exports.
In the 1980s, Samsung continued their growth and diversification – all the way to outer space. Samsung Aerospace Industries, which began as Samsung Precision Company in 1977, began focusing on space stations and space facilities for the moon and beyond. In 1985, Samsung Data Systems was born with a focus on information technology. During this decade several Samsung companies merged together under the "Second Foundation." By integrating similar companies, Samsung endeavored to become one of the top five electronics companies in the world.
During the 1990s, mergers and acquisitions were the rule for Samsung. A move toward "New Management" that focused on "quality first" helped Samsung reach their goal on many fronts. Notable electronic developments during this decade include the introduction of a 10-inch TFT LCD panel and the world's first 64M DRAM. In fact, Samsung is the world leader in the LCD business. Samsung was able to survive difficult economic times due to its size and diversification.
Presently, Samsung consistently ranks as being one of the top ten for U.S. patents issued. In addition, thirteen Samsung products are number one in market share for their categories around the world.
Among the consumer computer and peripheral products that Samsung manufactures are: monitors, hard disk drives, optical disk drives, portable projectors, mobile PCs. Other products include cameras and camcorders, mobile phones, televisions, MP3 players, printers, and home appliances.
Business products include: IT products, LCD panels, set top boxes, semi conductors, storage, fiber optics, professional audio and video solutions, CCTV, and business telephone systems.
Samsung's roots date back over 80 years. Samsung has come a long way from selling dried Korean fish.
