Router Drivers
Routers are computer devices that provide connectivity between networked computers and devices. Essentially, routers are computers with their own operating systems that forward, or "route" information. Routers are also used extensively by businesses, organizations, and Internet Service Providers. For example, think of the Internet as a huge network of smaller networks - all interconnected by routers. Routers are the critical link in passing information and ensuring the data gets to its intended destination.
Routers vary in their tasks and sophistication. For example, if you have Internet sharing enabled between to Windows based computers, the computer with the Internet connection acts as a simple router. Small businesses require more sophistication of their routers and usually install standalone routers that both route information as well as help to secure their networks. Enterprise organizations and ISPs require huge routers capable of handling millions of data packets per second.
As more consumers set up home networks, new types of routers have become quite common: wireless routers and home networking routers. These routers allow multiple computers to connect into a small home network either wirelessly or with Ethernet cables. Though technically called "residential gateways," the term router is generally applied to this class of networking devices. Each computer along with the Internet connection (such as DSL line or broadband cable connection) connects to the router. This means that any computer connected to the router has access to the Internet and any shared network resources such as printers or other peripheral devices.
In order to connect to a home network router, each computer must have a network card or a wireless network adapter (for wireless network routers).
The major players in the world of routers are Cisco Systems and Linksys. Cisco routers are found in enterprise organizations, businesses, and ISPs. Technology is rapidly changing with integration of data, voice, video, wireless, and other applications becoming more common. Cisco routers are generally on the cutting edge of networking technology. This technology is complex, requiring qualified personnel. In fact, Cisco provides entire career paths and IT certifications related to working with their networking products.
Linksys is the leading router manufacturer catering to small businesses and home networking. Linksys is actually a division of Cisco. Cisco acquired Linksys in 2003 as a means toward entering the home networking market. Linksys routers are designed with the less demanding networking uses in mind. They are affordable devices that facilitate sharing of broadband Internet access, printers, files, videos, data, gaming, and other applications over wireless or Ethernet-connected small networks.
Without routers, networking - and the Internet - would not be possible. Routers range in size, sophistication, and capabilities from basic Internet sharing and residential gateways to gigantic pieces of equipment that resemble supercomputers. Even a simple act such as sending an e-mail to a friend involves hundreds of routers working in the background, transmitting packets of data in mere milliseconds.
