Radeon Drivers

download drivers Radeon is a brand of graphics processing unit from ATI. First introduced in 2000, the ATI Radeon graphics processing family quickly became one of the leading choices for high-end graphics cards. These feature-rich cards have always incorporated the latest graphic innovations and performance features. Hardcore gamers and 3D designers alike knew that they could count on the latest Radeon GPU for stunning visual effects, exceptional gaming performance, and technological advancements.

In 2006, AMD acquired ATI. AMD has preserved the acronym "ATI" for many of the ATI technologies and products including ATI Radeon cards.

Dozens of different Radeon models exist with several different product categories such as high-end gaming cards, mainstream graphics cards, and budget graphics cards. Radeon graphics processors are also broken down into multiple generations based on which version of DirectX they support.

The first generation R100 supported DirectX 7. This Radeon series included HyperZ technology. The Radeon 7500 was the last graphics processing unit released under the R100 series. Subsequent series such as R200 through R520 adopted the subsequent versions of Direct X and incorporated new technology. R600 was notable for being the first series of Radeon cards to support DirectX 10.0 as well as Direct3D 10.0. Some products in this series also support DirectX 10.1.

The ATI Radeon naming scheme is fairly complex at first glance. However, this scheme, once understood, makes it easy to determine which market segment the card is designed for. For example, cards issued since the release of the ATI Radeon HD 3000 series use a naming scheme where higher numerical digits in the model name denote the higher end cards. A card named X800 is a higher end card than the mainstream X700 or budget X300. Likewise, HD 2900 offers more performance and features than a HD 2600 (mainstream) or HD 2400 (budget).

Like all hardware devices, Radeon cards require device drivers in order to interact with the computer's operating system. Radeon comes with an innovative package of drivers known as "ATI Catalyst." While most computer drivers do their function without much, if any, user interaction, Catalyst comes with a Catalyst Control Center where users can fully configure their Radeon graphics processor. For example, users can tweak their cards for enhanced performance, configure multiple monitors, or make adjustments using built-in wizards.

ATI Radeon graphics cards started out as high-end cards for gamers and designers who demand the best in graphic performance. Mainstream and budget models offer other users a quality graphics card with fewer features and lower prices.
