download drivers GeForce graphics processors are made by NVIDIA and have a stellar reputation amongst gamers seeking high quality graphics. While gamers have long embraced GeForce graphics cards, the GeForce product line now extends to a wider audience with features ranging from hard-core gaming graphics and performance to value graphics cards more suited to web surfing.

GeForce graphics cards offer a variety of features including improved PC performance, fast gaming, and smooth videos. NVIDIA offers GeForce graphics cards in different tiers. For example, the 7 Series includes graphics processors designed for videos, photos, and Internet usage; the 8 Series includes graphics processors with support for Microsoft DirectX10; and the 9 Series is designed to cover all intensive graphics needs including gaming and HD video viewing and editing.

The GeForce story begins in 1999 with the GeForce 256. These boards originally contained SDRAM memory which was later replaced with DDR memory. The GeForce 256 has the distinction of being the first graphics card featuring hardware transform, shading, and lighting. Subsequent generations such as GeForce 2, 3, and 4 continued to be popular with gamers. Enhancements included improved performance, shading, memory controllers, and increased clock speed.

As the GeForce family continued its evolution, increased clock speeds and other improvements continued. For example, high dynamic range imaging, Scalable Link Interface, and Pure Video capabilities were implemented into the GeForce 6 series while transparency supersampling and transparency multisampling anti-aliasing were introduced in GeForce 7 cards. GeForce 8 was the first graphics card to fully support DirectX 10.

GeForce 9 Series graphics cards offer numerous features including coverage sample anti-aliasing, Scalable Link Interface, angle independent anisotropic filtering, and128Bit OpenEXR HDR, PureVideo 2 with VP2, BSP Engine, and AES128 Engine. Depending on the particular model selected, some GeForce 9 cards also have support for 3-way or quad Scalable Link Interface.

So, what do all of these acronyms and features really mean? Several different technologies power GeForce graphics. For example, PureVideo HD involves a dedicated video processing core and a set of drivers to deliver exceptional HD video quality with minimal power usage.

Scalable Link Interface, or SLI, technology allows for the combination of multiple GeForce cards into a single system which dramatically increases performance. SLI ready PCs are on the market. An SLI ready computer has an NVIDIA nForce SLI motherboard along with a single SLI ready graphics card. The computer user can then upgrade the system by adding additional SLI cards.

GeForce graphics cards continue their evolution promising even faster performance and clearer images with each new generation. For extreme gamers who want the most performance possible, taking advantage of SLI technology and combining multiple GeForce cards is a sure fire way to maximize performance.
