Gateway Drivers
Ever wonder the story behind the computers that came in a cow-spotted box? The cow print boxes are a tribute to the birthplace of Gateway – an Iowa farmhouse. Gateway founder, Ted Waitt, penned a three-page business plan in 1985, obtained a $10,000 loan backed by his grandmother, rented a computer, and created a revolutionary computer company.
By 1993, Gateway was a Fortune 500 company listed on the NASDAQ. A few years later, Gateway moved to the New York Stock Exchange. Gateway's current success is based on a history of innovations including being the first PC maker to include color monitors and three year warranty periods as standard features and one of the first to sell computers online. Gateway also launched consumer electronics products such as plasma televisions and digital displays under the Gateway brand name.
In 2004, Gateway acquired eMachines, a company known for producing inexpensive, "value" computers. Combined, these two brands offered something for everyone. Gateway kept the eMachine brand and sold it alongside their premium offerings.
In October 2007, Acer Inc. acquired Gateway thus becoming the third largest PC maker in the world. Both Gateway and eMachine brands remain available with offerings such as Gateway notebooks, desktops, displays, gaming devices, accessories, and consumer electronics as well as eMachine desktops and displays.
Gateway notebooks include several different series designed for mobility, performance, or flexibility. Among Gateway's desktop models are value computers, performance systems, and all-in-one units. Gateway's LCD displays range from basic models to a 30-inch ExtremeHD widescreen display.
In addition to computers and displays, Gateway stores also sell a variety of home electronics and software. These products aren't necessarily Gateway branded products. For example, when shopping at the Gateway website, a consumer can purchase a Gateway computer as well as products such as Sansa MP3 players, TurboTax software, PC games, cell phones, PDAs, digital cameras, video cameras, and Microsoft Xbox consoles.
While Gateway is now under new ownership and no longer operating from an Iowa farmhouse, the company's heritage lives on.
