Compaq Drivers
Imagine leaving a major corporation, Texas Instruments, along with two other partners and investing $1000 each to form a new company with the goal of producing a portable personal computer. That's how Compaq Computer Corporation started in 1982. The three senior managers of Texas Instruments, Rod Canion, Jim Harris, and Bill Murto, sketched out their ideas on a placemat in a pie shop in Houston and then approached a venture capital firm.
By the end of the following year, Compaq's Initial Public Offering raised $67 million on the NASDAQ and over 53,000 portable Compaq computers were shipped. Compaq set a record for first year revenues with over $111 million earned in their first year of operation. Compaq continued breaking U.S. revenue records in the following years and was the fastest company to make the Fortune 500 list. By 1995, after a series of expansions and the development of numerous desktops, laptops, and pen-based computers, Compaq achieved the number 1 position in the world for PC marketshare. In the following years, Compaq continued its rise, earning accolades from Forbes Magazine, entering into an agreement with Radio Shack, acquiring DEC, and registering the AltaVista domain name. Further innovations followed including the introduction of the iPAQ Pocket PC and iPAQ Home Internet Appliance, collaboration with the Walt Disney Company, Microsoft, Starbucks, and Yahoo, and recognition for becoming a leader in wireless technology. It's no wonder that HP found Compaq attractive. In 2002, Compaq and HP merged forming a $87 billion global technology company. Compaq products include notebooks, computers, handhelds, printers, digital cameras, televisions, and accessories. As the two brands, Compaq and HP, continue to blend, so too are the names. For example, the iPAQ line is now called HP iPAQ. This line includes iPAQ GPS systems, PDAs, and PDA phones. On the other hand, the Compaq Presario line remains known under the Compaq name. Compaq was one of the pioneers of "Build to Order" manufacturing where consumers could have their Compaq computers built to order. Today, that tradition continues. Users can build several models of Presario computers to their own specifications including choosing which operating system to install, processor type and speed, display, memory, graphics card, networking, hard drive, CD/DVD drive, and accessories. The build to order system is offered online where a "base" model is selected with default options pre-selected. The user simply selects the desired option, places the order, and the computer is built and shipped. Both Compaq and HP have long, successful histories.
