Atheros manufactures a variety of wireless products including wireless network adapters, Bluetooth network devices, GPS solutions and chipsets, Ethernet products, and Personal Access Systems (PAS) technologies.
Atheros was founded in 1998 with an emphasis on 5GHz technology. Within a decade, Atheros became one of the technological leaders of wireless systems. Atheros remains a strong provider of WLAN products and has enhanced their product lineup to including wireless network processors, Bluetooth technology, Ethernet technology, and PAS cellular solutions. Wireless home users will find that Atheros WLAN products offer superior throughput and range and are much easier to use than comparable products. For example, users who have purchased JumpStart for Wireless can set up an Atheros-based network with a simple push of a button. Once the JumpStart for Wireless network has been created, users can add any certified Wi-Fi Protected Setup device to the network such as digital cameras, cell phones, VoIP phones, digital media players, MP3 players, set-top boxes, and gaming devices. Microsoft has adopted Atheros WLAN technology for seamless home and office operation with the Vista operating system. Wi-Fi standards continue to evolve and Atheros continues to be a leader in their innovation. The 802.11n Wi-Fi standard allows WLAN devices to communicate more efficiently than earlier Wi-Fi technologies such as 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g. As more devices require greater bandwidth, the need for enhanced wireless technology has increased. For example, VoIP, the Microsoft Media Center standard TV stream, and MPEG 2 HDTV are rapidly becoming more popular. VoIP adds at least 1Mbps, Microsoft Media Center TV stream adds between 8-10 Mbps, and MPEG 2 HDTV adds about 20 Mbps per channel to the bandwidth requirements. Products such as Atheros XSPAN provide up to 300 Mbps of actual throughput. Atheros continues to innovate with products that combine GPS technology, hardware, and software. For example, the second generation, single chip GPS receiver coupled with the Orion 3.0 software suite can be integrated into mobile phones, Personal Navigation Devices, and Personal Media Players offering exciting new performance and features. Radio-On-Chip Mobile (ROCm) technology is another hallmark of Atheros innovations. These next generation smart phones are quickly becoming multimedia computers. Because of this evolution, the need for WLAN performance and power efficiency is also evolving. Atheros ROCm solutions feature high performance, low power Wi-Fi connectivity. Their ROCm products use 70 percent less power in active mode (and virtually zero power in standby) than their competing products. This power efficiency doesn't sacrifice throughput either. These products deliver infrastructure-class throughput despite their enhanced power efficiency.
